Allen Robinson is an interesting guy. He's a phenomenal wide receiver and one of the best charity guys on the entire team. While not outspoken to the media, he is outspoken on social media. One of the more interesting threads that has cropped up about him in the past few weeks is the situation at safety for the Chicago Bears. It first appeared when reports came out that former Pro Bowler Eric Berry was trying to make a comeback after spending a year off in 2019.
Robinson fantasized about the idea of pairing him with Eddie Jackson. A comment that got him in hot water with teammate Ha Ha Clinton-Dix. This despite it being well-known the latter is more than likely gone as a free agent this month. Then things went silent for a while. That is until Robinson struck again, this time posting an interesting video of Tony Jefferson.
For those who don't know, the 28-year old safety was released last month by the Baltimore Ravens. Prior to that, he was considered one of the better strong safeties in the NFL. The Bears have need of a strong safety and the weirdest part is Robinson has no direct ties to Jefferson. They aren't former teammates in the pros or college.
It appears the receiver is just keeping tabs on the guy. It might be nothing. It might be something.
Allen Robinson has a strong eye for good team fits
It could easily just be one player supporting another. Jefferson went down with injury last year and is working his way back to full strength. Something Robinson had to do after tearing his ACL back in 2017. Still, the timing of this is fascinating. Jefferson is currently free to sign with any team and the Bears are certainly on the safety market. Not only is Clinton-Dix coming out of contract, but Deon Bush and DeAndre Houston-Carson are as well.
Jefferson had 74 tackles, a sack, and an interception in 14 games for the Ravens two years ago. His ability to be a force around the line of scrimmage, blitz, and stop the run are all benefits. Having a guy like that would free the Bears up to drop Jackson back in deep coverage. An area where he is elite among his peers. Such a pairing would make plenty of sense. Returning to what the defense had with Jackson and Amos in 2018.
The question will be price. Jefferson is still on the younger side with a solid track record. At the same time, his recent health issue will likely keep his price tag low.
