Allen Robinson remains fully committed to the Chicago Bears for 2020. His goal is obvious. That's to make the playoffs and win a Super Bowl. However, a lot of fans are concerned about the state of his contract. The star wide receiver is in the last year of his current deal. That means he'll enter 2021 as a free agent. Hence why so many people are calling on the team to get an extension worked out sooner than later.
For their part, the team has made it known they hope to keep him. Still, a deal hasn't been worked out yet and likely won't until after the draft. For his part, Robinson isn't sweating things out. He told Dave Kaplan of ESPN that he understands this is a business matter. Such things take time. One thing is for sure. The 26-year old made it clear he wants to stay in Chicago.
For the rest of his career, if possible.
"You know, I definitely understand that this isn't my first time going into a new contract, so things definitely do take time. I understand the business of it. For Bears fans: I love the city of Chicago. From the day that I signed here, I said I wanted to retire a Bear. So everyone knows where I stand on that. At the end of the day, I definitely think that's something that has a possibility of getting done, but at the end of the day, it's a business. There's a lot that goes into it. We'll see."
Allen Robinson should be locked up by August
The reality is this feels like a foregone conclusion. Robinson isn't stupid. He's a tough negotiator. There was no indication he plans to give the Bears a discount. So it was a matter of GM Ryan Pace talking things through with his agent to find common ground on a deal. That typically takes time. Judging by previous examples, one can guess something will be worked out before the regular season begins in September.
This is probably why Robinson hasn't been overly vocal on the subject or shown any signs of concern. Both sides want to get a deal done. It's a matter of hashing out the details. There is no rush. Pace is focused on improving the roster at the present time. Things will come back around to discussions probably next month.
