While people continue to discuss what the Chicago Bears might do next in free agency, GM Ryan Pace knows he has one piece of business that takes priority over the rest. He has to ensure he gets an extension worked out with wide receiver Allen Robinson. The 26-year old earned every bit of his current deal with the Bears, becoming their unquestioned go-to target in the passing game with over 1,100 yards and seven touchdowns in 2020.
This despite a myriad of problems at the quarterback position. Chicago should want to ensure he's the focal point of their passing attack for years to come. A Pro Bowl-caliber weapon who is great both on and off the field. Maybe he and Nick Foles can form a connection that exceeds what he and Trubisky have had the past two years. The question is will this extension get worked out.
According to Brad Biggs of the Chicago Tribune, the wide receiver seems more upbeat about it than he has in the past month.
“Definitely optimistic,” Robinson said. “But optimistic or not, I am in Chicago and everybody knows where I stand and how I feel about Chicago. At the end of the day, whatever happens, happens. I only can control so much, and that is to go out there and have myself prepared to play each and every Sunday. I can’t concern myself too much with what’s going on and different decisions that can and can’t be made.”
Allen Robinson deal might be holding up other moves
A couple of weeks ago when Robinson was asked about the contract talks, he seemed a little more subdued, saying there had been "minimal" action at that point. So this reply is definitely encouraging. Odds are the Bears want to get this thing done sooner than later because an extension would allow them to lower the receiver's 2020 cap hit, freeing up badly-needed space. This could explain why certain key moves like the Foles trade and Robert Quinn signing haven't become official yet.
The truth is this feels like a foregone conclusion. It's only a matter of time before the two sides reach the desired destination. Chicago cannot afford to let Robinson slip away. Not with so many other questions on offense. He's the one thing they can count on at this point. You keep guys like that around.
