Nobody thinks the Pro Bowl should be taken seriously as an actual game by any stretch of the imagination. Even so, being elected to participate in it is still considered a nod of approval from the NFL that you are one of the better players in professional football. If anybody deserved that honor in 2019 for the Chicago Bears, that was wide receiver Allen Robinson. After a decent 2018, he became arguably the best player on the entire team this season.
Through 14 games, he has 1,023 yards receiving with six touchdowns. This despite playing with what can best be called uneven quarterbacks in Mitch Trubisky and Chase Daniel. So when the NFC rosters were announced, it was reasonable to expect people would acknowledge this. Then again it also becomes unreasonable to think the NFL operates with any amount of logic in regards to such matters.
The Bears did have members of their team reach the Pro Bowl. Three of them, in fact. Khalil Mack, Eddie Jackson, and Cordarrelle Patterson took home the honors. Sad but not totally terrible. There is still a chance for Robinson to get in as an alternate, right? Right? Nope. The Bears had three alternates as well in Eddie Goldman, Kyle Fuller, and Tarik Cohen. Robinson was completely snubbed. A complete joke.
Allen Robinson was a victim of the numbers game
Unfortunately, Robinson became just the latest to suffer from a classic bias with Pro Bowl voting. That of an obsession over stats. While he was definitely productive, he ranked just sixth in receptions, 10th in yards, and ninth in touchdowns. This allowed other receivers who had the benefit of far better circumstances to jump ahead of him. Guys like Michael Thomas, Amari Cooper, and Stefon Diggs. All of those guys enjoy better quarterbacks.
Robinson is still waiting for one who can finally unlock his full potential. Keep in mind this is a guy who has gotten 1,000-yard seasons from Trubisky and Blake Bortles. How can anybody deny he's one of the best wide receivers in the league with such a boast under his belt? Regardless of the tragic lack of respect, the Bears know exactly what he is worth. If they're smart they'll be working hard going into the offseason to secure the 26-year old to a contract extension.
