One of the time-honored traditions of training camp for the Chicago Bears is the defense lording it over the offense. It's been the case for many years, going back through the 2000s, 1980s, and 1960s. A big part of that is because the defense typically had the majority of talent on their side of the ball. That pendulum might be swinging the other way in 2023. Training camp has barely begun. Players are still getting acclimated. Yet one thing is becoming an inescapable fact. Justin Fields and D.J. Moore are a problem.
It started immediately in OTAs. The connection between quarterback and new wide receiver often takes time to materialize. However, it seemed like Fields and Moore clicked from the jump. They linked up on several passes all through the spring and early summer. Now they are two practices into training camp, and reports indicate they're giving the defense fits. Two highlight clips released by the Bears' social media don't even encompass the number of times they've connected in drills. You can even see the visible frustration of safety Jaquan Brisker after Moore torched him and cornerback Tyrique Stevenson for a long gain.
Justin Fields and D.J. Moore are building confidence rapidly.
This kind of chemistry hasn't been seen since Mitch Trubisky and Allen Robinson. Maybe even Jay Cutler and Brandon Marshall. Though the two haven't played an actual game together yet, history says the Bears passing attack tends to excel when this type of pairing emerges. This isn't even mentioning what Moore's presence has done for others on the roster. Chase Claypool, Cole Kmet, and Robert Tonyan have all produced positive moments over the past two days. Darnell Mooney is close to being at full speed for practice.
We might be getting a glimpse of Ryan Poles' vision for this offense. Justin Fields made occasional great plays with his arm last year. He didn't have a receiver he could rely on to get open when the Bears needed a conversion. That's what Robinson was for Trubisky and Marshall for Cutler. D.J. Moore is that guy for Fields. He has the ability to consistently get open and doesn't struggle to make tough catches. This should lead to fewer stalled drives and, as a result, more points.
