Bears Don't Flinch By Grabbing Their Quarterback of the Future

Would the Bears draft Mitch Trubisky? It was the buzz question of the entire offseason. He was thehot name. That quarterback who wowed the football world by seemingly coming out of nowhere at North Carolina. Everything from his athleticism, to the poise, accuracy and clutch performance under pressure were on display. He looked how an NFL quarterback should look. Under control, versatile and tough. This is the draft though. Teams focus less on what's good about a player and more about what's wrong with them. One might call it the "nitpicking season." For him the concerns were pretty straightforward. He doesn't throw the hardest ball and can tend to make some poor reads, resulting in interceptions. Both are fair judgments. Still, is that really enough to hold him back from being a high first round choice?

The Bears don't think so.

Trubisky is a high-end quarterback prospect who possesses NFL size, a big arm and the ability to throw with accuracy from the pocket or on the move. Despite playing in a spread-based offense, he's a full-field reader who does a very good job of getting an early read on the safeties before crafting his course of action. Trubisky will have to become much more pocket aware and do a better job of recognizing and attacking blitzes to back NFL defensive coordinators off. He hasn't put all the pieces together yet, but the puzzle is all right in front. Trubisky projects as a good starting quarterback with a high floor and the potential to be great.

It looked from the beginning like Trubisky was destined for Chicago. Why? For starters he's the most complete quarterback in the draft, with respect to Deshaun Watson. He also is an excellent fit for the type of offense Dowell Loggains likes to run. His lack of experience is an issue, but not after what the Bears have done to prepare. He'll be able to sit behind Mike Glennon for this season, learning the ropes with help from respected veteran Mark Sanchez. One should expect it won't be long before he finds his way onto the field.
