A Cam Newton trade is certainly something worth getting excited about. At least a little bit. The 30-year old quarterback is a former MVP and one of the most unique physical specimens in NFL history. However, as the Carolina Panthers hit the reset button on their franchise, his future there winding down. Thus they've begun exploring trade options. This brings up the obvious question.
Are the Chicago Bears interested?
According to Jonathan Jones of CBS Sports, the two teams have recently had contact regarding such a possibility. Belief is they're doing this because they have a fear that if they let the quarterback get released, a possibility many envision, then they won't be able to compete for his price tag on the open market. If nothing else, it would be the bold move many fans have pined for.
Cam Newton trade would be an all-in move for Bears
Thus far the belief has been that Andy Dalton and Nick Foles are the most likely guys to end up in Chicago. While both bring more credibility to the position for different reasons, nobody can say they'd be excited about the prospect of either. Mostly because it would mean Mitch Trubisky likely remains the starter going into 2020 at least for the time being. That would not be the case with Newton. Acquiring him means the Bears are serious about winning this year.
There is a definite risk involved. Newton is coming off missing most of 2019 with a foot injury. Due to the Coronavirus outbreak, the ability for the Bears to get a physical for him is severely hampered. They'd be venturing into unknown territory if they were to make such a deal, placing a lot of trust in independent doctor evaluations.
Still, if they can get a healthy version of Newton on the field then their offense becomes that much more dynamic.
