Adam Shaheen stuck out as one of the more baffling players still on the Chicago Bears roster following the main part of the offseason. The former 2nd round pick had done close to nothing across three years with the team. Either he looked almost invisible on the field or he was busy rehabbing an injury. After GM Ryan Pace added Jimmy Graham and Cole Kmet, the excuses for keeping him disappeared.
Yet he remained on the payroll. At last, the merciful nightmare is over and in the best way possible. Somehow Pace managed to get something worthwhile out of it, shipping the tight end to the Miami Dolphins in exchange for a 6th round pick. A shocking return that absolutely nobody thought was possible. Kudos to the Bears GM for somehow finding a buyer.
Adam Shaheen exit is another draft failure Pace cut loose
It feels like this is the offseason where Pace is finally accepting reality. Already he cut Leonard Floyd in favor of signing Robert Quinn. Nick Foles was added via trade to compete with Mitch Trubisky. Now Shaheen is on his way to South Beach. The trade gives the Bears a sixth pick for the 2021 draft. They traded their 4th and 7th rounders for Trevis Gipson and Eddy Pineiro respectively.
Belief is they could end up with three or four compensatory picks as well, which should give them plenty of flexibility. In the end, Shaheen will be remember as a misguided evaluation by the team. He certainly had athletic upside with his mixture of size and speed. Yet he had zero experience against top competition at Ashland and arrived late to football as a transfer from college basketball.
The Bears are in far more capable hands with Graham and Kmet.
