The buzz word regarding the Chicago Bears quarterback position remains unchanged to most of the national media. It's going to be a "competition" between Mitch Trubisky and new arrival Nick Foles to see who is the starter for the 2020 season. GM Ryan Pace knew he had to give his team the best possible chance to succeed and feels bringing in the former Super Bowl MVP was the right decision. Especially given his connections to the coaching staff.
However, is it really as balanced as many seem to think it is? Brad Biggs of the Chicago Tribune isn't so sure. When asked about his impressions of the Foles trade, he didn't mince words. It is his firm belief that this wasn't done to push Trubisky. It was done to replace him. This team might hide behind the idea of a competition, but that job will belong to Foles when the dust settles.
"The Bears didn’t give up the 120th pick in the draft and guarantee more than $20 million to Foles to have his arrival spark a fire under Mitch Trubisky...The Bears don’t have time during the season to determine if things are going to suddenly click for Trubisky. If they struggle offensively from the start and find themselves behind a month into the season, that creates an uphill climb....No matter how the team frames an offseason or training camp competition for the job, I firmly believe Foles will emerge as Nagy’s guy before the opener."
Nick Foles vs. Mitch Trubisky does feel rigged
Truth be told, Biggs has a point. The Bears have stacked the deck against Trubisky. With minicamps and OTAs all but out of the question and training camp likely getting pushed to the fall, it feels like Trubisky is already facing a steep uphill battle to keep his job. Foles has the proven track record and much tighter connections to the new coaching staff save for Nagy himself and Nagy has made it clear he hasn't been satisfied with his progress.
Combine that with coming off shoulder surgery? This does feel like it's Foles' job to lose. Unless he gets hurt or just looks way worse than expected in practice and the preseason, he should be the starter when the Bears suit up for opening day. Whenever that ends up being.
