GM Ryan Pace remains steadfast with his original stance from back in January. The current plan is for Mitch Trubisky to be the starting quarterback Week 1 of the 2020 regular season. Of course he had to say that. Both because he had no intention of letting anybody in on his actual plans for the position and because Trubisky is the only QB the Chicago Bears have under contract.
That said, both Pace and head coach Matt Nagy haven't hidden their feelings about adding competition. Their comments on it make it seem almost inevitable that the team will be aggressive in finding somebody who can come in and push Trubisky for the starting job. Already there have been rumors of significant interest in names like Andy Dalton and Case Keenum.
Adam Jahns of The Athletic though isn't convinced it stops there.
The Bears insider seems to have a firm belief that the team plans to be aggressive. If the right name becomes available, they have no qualms about replacing Trubisky outright and forgoing a competition altogether.
"First, it depends on what they do at quarterback. I’m not 100 percent convinced that Trubisky will be their Week 1 starter in 2020. What the Bears say publicly and talk about behind closed doors is different.
As Kevin Fishbain and I wrote last week, when the Bears started to use the word “competition” to describe their quarterback situation, it was a signal to the league, from agents to rival GMs, that they’re open for business.
It also means that they’re willing to change. Call it a contingency plan if you want, but it could very well turn into a replacement plan."
Mitch Trubisky best hope free agency breaks his way
The truth is Trubisky's fate is no longer in his hands. So much of this will depend on what happens next week when free agency begins. Several quarterbacks are known to be available, both as free agents and via trade. If the dominos fall a certain way and a window opens up to somebody who is a clear upgrade then don't think for a second the aggressive Pace won't take that opportunity.
Who could one of those names be? Derek Carr comes to mind. So does Cam Newton, Philip Rivers, and even Nick Foles. All have much more proven track records of success than Trubisky. If circumstances break the right way, the Bears could pounce. He best hope things end up being sort of an anticlimax, forcing them to play the bargain route. His odds of keeping the job against Dalton or Keenum are much higher.
