New Favorite Emerging For Possible Matt Nagy Replacement

The Chicago Bears no doubt continue to hope they can still turn the season around. The NFC playoff picture isn't settled yet. At least with the bottom two seeds. A strong run in the second half may yet get this team back in the mix. However, nobody is holding their breath. Head coach Matt Nagy doesn't have much to hang his hat on this year. He badly mishandled the quarterback situation with Justin Fields and has watched his offense sink to one of the worst in the NFL. If that weren't bad enough, his team is now riding a four-game losing streak. Much of that is due to their constant inability to avoid costly mistakes. The latest defeat in Pittsburgh is a perfect example. While many of the penalties they received were highly questionable, several others were not. The fact is the Bears played another sloppy game and paid the price for it. That falls at the feet of the head coach.

This is why Nagy is on the hot seat.

Multiple reports have continued to suggest he is all but gone at this point. SM has stated already that ownership is compiling a list of possible candidates to replace him. Thus far it hasn't been known whether any true favorites have emerged. However, a source indicated that might be changing. One name that has begun to gain some serious steam of late is Dallas Cowboys offensive coordinator Kellen Moore. There is no denying the success the 32-year old has had since taking over that job back in 2019. The year prior to his promotion, Dallas had the 22nd ranked offense in the NFL. In the three years since? They ranked 1st, 14th, and 1st. It should be noted that the 14th ranking was done without the services of Dak Prescott for most of the season. Moore has done a tremendous job down there and has the Cowboys in hot contention for the #1 playoff seed. Moore is much more proven than Matt Nagy was

Nagy was only in his second season as offensive coordinator for the Chiefs before the Bears came calling. Even then he'd only called plays for half a season. He was far from a proven commodity. Such is not the case with Moore. He has had firm control of the call sheet for three years in Dallas and had consistent success most of that time. While quite young for a possible head coach, he isn't unprepared. He is the son of Tom Moore, one of the best high school football coaches in Washington state history. He won four state titles during his 22-year run at Prosser High School. Then when Moore played quarterback at Boise State, he was under the watchful eye of Chris Petersen who had a 147-38 career record as a college coach between that school and Washington. Then upon reaching the NFL, Moore played under Jim Caldwell in Detroit and now works under Mike McCarthy in Dallas.

The man has learned from some highly capable head coaches throughout his career.

Chicago is right to view him as a top candidate. There is no denying his grasp of the Xs and Os as a play caller. In addition, he was known as a capable leader during his playing days. He looks like the guy Matt Nagy should've been. Considering what Moore has done for Dak Prescott? It is no doubt exciting to think he might do the same for Justin Fields. It will be interesting to see if the Bears move to meet with him at the end of the year.
