It seems the buzz has really begun to pick up down in Indianapolis. As teams convene for the scouting combine, rumors have begun to fly in full force. The ones involving the Chicago Bears are fairly predictable. Most of them center around what they're going to do at quarterback. GM Ryan Pace already stated for a second time that the plans are for Mitch Trubisky to be the starter again in 2020. Then again it's not like he could say much else with the 25-year old being the only one currently under contract.
Another thing Pace mentioned multiple times at his first combine appearance? The idea of competition. He brought the word up twice in fact and didn't leave quarterback out of the plans for that. All signs have pointed thus far to the belief that the Bears will make a push of some magnitude to get a quarterback this offseason who can come in and make Trubisky uncomfortable. To play with more urgency.
According to Jeremy Fowler of ESPN, they have a specific type they're looking for too. Not just somebody with decent talent. It would appear they're also seeking a player with considerable experience as well.
This might narrow the field for the Chicago Bears
The keyword in that tweet is "extensive." Most of the quarterbacks in the 2020 free agent class have starting experience. Extensive though? That might eliminate some names off the list. Teddy Bridgewater is one of them for example. Though he's been around the league since 2014, he's only started 34 total games. By contrast, Ryan Tannehill (98), Jameis Winston (70), Case Keenum (62), and Marcus Mariota (61) have all started far more.
The same can be said of possible trade targets like Derek Carr (94) and Andy Dalton (133).
So much of this will likely come down to price and timing. Not every quarterback is going to come off the board right away next month. Some of them could end up waiting longer than expected. This would end up dropping their price. Probably to something the Bears are more willing to pay. It's clear though by these rumors that they are looking for more stability at the quarterback position.
