Chicago Bears fans love to rag on Kirk Cousins as a quarterback. However, would they take him over Mitch Trubisky at this point? Of course they would. Cousins isn't elite but he's a highly productive quarterback who can run an offense well. This is why teams constantly take shots in the later rounds of the draft. There is always the chance somebody could land the next Cousins or Dak Prescott.
So who does the NFL think might fit that profile this year? It depends on who you ask. That said, there is a growing buzz around Florida International quarterback James Morgan. He first popped up on the radar during the East-West Shrine Game and has only continued to gain momentum since. Reports out of the scouting combine are glowing. Not only was he strong in interviews, he also looked among the best throwing the ball in drills.
According to Eric Edholm of Yahoo, the Bears are one of the teams who have shown the most interest in Morgan. They were one of the first to meet with him back in January and it seems that intrigue has only grown since.
Morgan could end up being better than Kirk Cousins
It's not a surprise Morgan became a quarterback. Aside from brandishing a strong arm, he grew up in Green Bay during Brett Favre and Aaron Rodgers eras. It was basically written in the stars. Draft experts love his physical upside. He has the size, big hands, and can deliver the ball with velocity. What has people concerned is his accuracy. It wasn't great in 2019. Was it simply because he doesn't have it or because of bad mechanics?
"Morgan is very capable of making impressive throws to all areas of the field, but his violent release and inconsistent footwork hinder functional ball placement and accuracy. His lack of pocket mobility and instincts make him too easy for defensive coordinators to assault with a variety of blitz packages. He's a tough guy with a big arm and the 2018 tape is the one to watch, but QB3 may be his ceiling."
Morgan was outstanding in 2018, throwing for 26 touchdowns with just seven interceptions. Last year he was banged up most of the season while his receivers dropped almost everything in sight. So it's difficult to get a gauge on who he really is. Still, enough talent is there to warrant a flier on Day 3 of the draft.
