Two weeks to go. The deadline for free agency to and the new NFL league year to begin is March 16th. All eyes are focused on March 16th. That is when the legal tampering period begins and the news is almost certain to come out regarding teams and players agreeing to deals. The Chicago Bears will be in the thick of it. Almost all discussions are sure to center on what they do regarding their quarterback situation.
Nobody can say for sure what GM Ryan Pace has planned. He's said twice in the past two months that the plan is for Mitch Trubisky to be the starter in 2020. Then again he had to say that because the 25-year old is the only one they have under contract and there's no guarantee the team finds an upgrade. Alienating him by saying he's out is not the wisest course of action.
That said, what is Pace planning? Will he seek a cheap backup who has starting experience like a Case Keenum or a Marcus Mariota? Or will he take a shot at somebody more established like Andy Dalton, Teddy Bridgewater, or even Derek Carr? Brad Biggs of the Chicago Tribune doesn't know which name they might prefer, but the Bears insider has a good idea of one thing.
The Bears won't be passive in their pursuit.
"The vibe I got last week in Indianapolis is the Bears have definitely prioritized the position — as they should — and will be aggressive. Whether things play out that way remains to be seen. General manager Ryan Pace knows he needs a life raft for the offense in the event Mitch Trubisky doesn’t show considerable improvement."
Chicago Bears are run by a man who isn't a passive type
This should not be a huge surprise to anybody. Pace may not make bold proclamations to the media as a GM, but the guy has a reputation for never sitting back and waiting. Especially when it comes to the quarterback position. He tried to trade up for both Marcus Mariota and Carson Wentz. He signed Mike Glennon to a significant contract and then traded three picks to get Trubisky a month later. While those decisions didn't pan out as hoped, the message itself was clear.
Pace will do what he must to fix the more important position in his sport.
People can criticize the man for a lot of things. This is not one of them. Nobody who has run the Bears franchise over the past several decades has prioritized the quarterback position as Pace has. This is a really good thing. The fact he's willing to be aggressive despite the Bears' lack of resources shows that no expense should be spared there. He is absolutely right to think that way. This is the fundamental reality of the NFL.
There are the teams that have a quarterback and the teams that don't.
