When talking about the Chicago Bears' free agency plans, it isn't as hot of a topic as the draft. That is because they hold the #1 pick, but also because GM Ryan Poles has tried to downplay the idea he'd be overly aggressive. This is despite having more cap space than any team in the NFL by a wide margin. He wants to be smart with his spending and build through the draft. That said, the Bears have so many roster holes to fill. He has to use free agency to plug at least one or two of them. It's about figuring out which he'll prioritize.
Most assume defensive tackle is the position to watch. It's understandable. They need a three-technique penetrator in the worst way after their defense managed only 20 sacks in 2022. There are some solid options available, like Dre'Mont Jones and Javon Hargrave. However, it sounds more and more like Chicago will focus on finding offensive line help instead. The big rumor is they are focused on right a definitive starting right tackle. Former Bears scout Greg Gabriel confirmed that during a column for Windy City Gridiron.
Yes, Chicago's offensive line struggled much of last year and mainly because of youth and injuries. Lucas Patrick was signed away from Green Bay to play center and, because of injuries, only played one quarter at center all season. Young guys like Teven Jenkins and Braxton Joes will be future stars. The way I hear it, right tackle is the biggest need the Bears have along the offensive line at this, and they will try and fill that need in free agency.
Chicago Bears should have options on the market.
When examining the names available, three legitimate right tackle starters stand out. One is Mike McGlinchey, the former 1st round pick out of Notre Dame. He's anchored the right side of the San Francisco 49ers' offensive line for years, helping them three conference championships and the Super Bowl in 2019. He's viewed as one of the best zone run blockers in the league, which makes his fit with the Bears obvious. His pass protection though isn't exactly a strength. Then there is Kaleb McGary, another former 1st rounder with the Atlanta Falcons. He, too, is known best for his run-blocking with adequate pass-protecting skills.
Last but not least is Jawaan Taylor. He is the opposite of McGlinchey and McGary. He grew to become one of the best pass-protecting right tackles in the NFL last season. Unfortunately, that reputation is dampened by subpar blocking in the run game. The Chicago Bears' decision may come down to their priorities. They were a running team in 2022. If they wish to keep that identity, then McGlinchey or McGary makes the most sense. Then again, if the goal is to make Justin Fields a better passer, then ensuring his protection is more important. That means Taylor.
