The Chicago Bears remain committed to Mitch Trubisky. Part of this is because they still believe he can be salvaged, but also because they don't really have another option at present. All signs point to them being active on the veteran market for QB help. Probably some form of competition who can push the 25-year old this coming season. Names like Andy Dalton, Marcus Mariota, and Case Keenum keep being brought up.
Yet until they actually add somebody, Trubisky is the guy. So head coach Matt Nagy must operate under the belief that it will remain this way. That helps to explain why he was so active back in January overhauling his coaching staff. Three assistants were fired and four new faces brought in, all of them with extensive NFL experience. Juan Castillo on the offensive line. Clancy Barone for the tight ends. Bill Lazor as offensive coordinator.
However, according to Kevin Fishbain of The Athletic heard down at the combine that many around the league think the addition of quarterbacks coach John DeFilippo might just be the guy who can rescue Trubisky's career.
Those familiar with John DeFilippo’s coaching methods said that Trubisky will be better off with “Flip” as his position coach instead of Dave Ragone, who remains on staff as Nagy’s new passing game coordinator. It starts with how DeFilippo communicates and teaches in the meeting rooms when going through film.
DeFilippo will teach Mitch Trubisky how to digest film
It's interesting they say that because one of the comments made by Nagy down at the combine about how Trubisky could get better was, "For him the processing part it has to get to a point to where you're so obsessed, no matter what you're doing, you're always watching film." The head coach openly admitted Trubisky's knowledge of the offense last year wasn't good enough. Coming into Year 3 in the system, that has to change.
DeFilippo is a grinder. His ability to break down film is well-respected around the league. It is a big reason why he's done such great work with quarterbacks in recent years. Carson Wentz, Nick Foles, Kirk Cousins, and Gardner Minshew all experienced career-best efforts under his direction. If Trubisky is a hard worker many claim he is, then he now has a guy who can streamline the process for him, making it easier to understand what to do and why.
The message is pretty simple. If DeFilippo can't get Trubisky pointed in the right direction, nobody can.
