The Chicago Bears remain committed to helping Mitch Trubisky get better. At the same time, they've also made it clear that competition is likely on the way. What kind of competition? Nobody can say for sure. Much of that depends on how the market shakes out next month. The Bears aren't the only team that will be on the hunt for help at the position. What other teams end up doing could have a significant impact on their own plans.
One team that many people are watching is the Indianapolis Colts. Expectations are they will move on from Jacoby Brissett after a disappointing 2019. The question is who will they go after? Considering they have the second-most salary cap space in the league, one can imagine they could lure any of the top free agents out there. Especially since they have one of the better offensive lines in football.
However, Tony Pauline of Pro Football Network has it on good authority that the team already has their guy in mind.
"What will the Indianapolis Colts do to solve their quarterback dilemma? It’s been reported the past few days that soon to be free agent Philip Rivers would be the perfect solution and people at the NFL Combine tell me they believe “this will happen.”
They point to the fact Rivers has a great relationship with head coach Frank Reich. It should also be an easy signing as the Colts are projected to have a lot of room under the cap."
Chicago Bears would benefit from this move by Indy
This sort of development would be really good news for the Bears. It would take arguably the most desirable landing spot in the league for veteran quarterbacks out of the running. Not to mention one of the most prominent threats to trade for Derek Carr if the Raiders actually do end up making him available. There is no question several other top landing spots will be plugged by 1st round picks.
Cincinnati, Miami, and Los Angeles all being the most likely.
This would leave just Tampa Bay, New England, and Tennessee as the only teams left to challenge them. If the Titans keep Ryan Tannehill as expected, then that narrows the list even further. Suddenly quarterbacks who might've seemed out of reach could end up coming at a cheaper price than expected.
Make no mistake there are still so many ways this process can play out. One thing is for sure though. Rivers going to Indianapolis is both expected and good for the Bears.
