It's clearer than ever that improving the Chicago Bears offense was the overriding motivation for this team when the offseason began. Not a surprise when they already have the best defense in the NFL. They signed Mike Davis in free agency. They selected David Montgomery and Riley Ridley in the draft. Now they've re-hired Brad Childress.
It looked the Bears were only going to get one year of consultation from the veteran coach in 2018. This because he was expecting to take over as head coach of the Atlanta Legends in the inaugural season of the Alliance of American Football. However, in early January he suddenly resigned from that post a month before the first game.
One has to wonder if Childress saw what was coming because just a couple months later the league folded. Now he's returned to Chicago to rejoin his friend and colleague, Matt Nagy.
Brad Childress still has plenty to offer Bears offense and Mitch Trubisky
Childress is 62-years old. He has a wealth of offensive knowledge that goes all the way back to 1978. Since then he's coached on multiple teams in the NFL and helped them achieve offensive success. Particularly at the quarterback position. In 1985 he got a career year out of journeyman Mike Pagel in Indianapolis.
After a long stint in college, he returned to join the Philadelphia Eagles. There he oversaw the ascent of future six-time Pro Bowler Donovan McNabb. As a head coach in Minnesota, he got the most efficient season out of Brett Favre in his Hall of Fame career in 2009. Then he went to Kansas City and helped Alex Smith become a four-time Pro Bowler alongside Nagy.
His wealth of experience and quarterback expertise can only improve the Bears' odds in making sure that Mitch Trubisky continues his ascent towards the top of the NFL mountain.
