The Chicago Bears haven't made any decisions regarding their power structure. This organization never does that during a season. They will let the remaining games play out and then go in a direction based on all the information they have. As things stand, here is what we know. GM Ryan Poles is safe. Evidence throughout the season has proven he has a sharp eye for talent. There is no justifiable reason to remove him. The bigger issue rests with head coach Matt Eberflus. While he's managed to steady the defense in recent weeks, questions remain about his capability at everything else.
His win against Detroit last Sunday was fun, but it can't erase several mistakes that have plagued this team since he took over. Among them are his conservative decision-making, questionable game management, and bad tendency for late-game collapses. Nothing is decided yet, but rumors linger that he is far from safe. This is especially true based on what Bill Barnwell of ESPN just wrote. If the Bears job becomes available this off-season, it will likely be the most coveted in the NFL.
"1. Chicago Bears
Pros: Draft capital, access to potential star quarterback, young roster
Cons: High-stakes decision to be made immediately, significant work needed on line of scrimmage
I don't know that a new coach will have the final say in that discussion, but if the Bears do fire Matt Eberflus, whoever they hire will be part of the process in terms of making a final decision about what to do at quarterback...
...While it can be nerve-racking to see the coach before the new hire get fired two seasons into a rebuild, I don't think Poles will lack for options if the Bears want to lean toward a more offensive-minded replacement for Eberflus in 2024."
The Chicago Bears will have a big opportunity if they wish to seize it.
Barnwell is saying that almost every viable head coach prospect will jump at the chance to take the Bears job. There won't be any "removing their name from consideration" in this situation. The prospect of two 1st round picks, a boatload of cap space, and possibly their choice of any quarterback in the draft is beyond appealing for any coach. Not to mention, this roster is nearing playoff-caliber. Anybody with common sense would love to jump into such a situation.
Much of this hinges on team president Kevin Warren. Rumors have persisted for weeks that he has designs on shaking up the football operations, intent on bringing in his own people. One of those jobs could be the head coach. Eberflus controls his destiny from here. If he can maintain the momentum through the final four games, winning the majority of them, there is a strong chance he will save his job. On the other hand, if he can't finish strong, then Warren may convince Poles this is the best time for a change.
