The Chicago Bears defense did really well on Saturday. The standout performance was from Trevis Gipson, a fourth-year player on the team. At the beginning of the week, the Bears released their depth chart for 2023, and it surprised many people, including Gipson. He was placed at the very bottom of the chart behind other players like Yannick Ngakoue, Rasheem Green, and Terrell Lewis. This unexpected placement motivated Gipson, as he confirmed in an interview with Nicholas Moreano, a CHGO beat reporter for the Chicago Bears.
Gipson shared that he hadn't seen the depth chart on social media since he had deleted his accounts, but he heard about it from others. He admitted that his performance at the Bears Family Fest wasn't great, and that, along with the news about his depth chart position, it pushed him to do well in the game against the Tennessee Titans. I highly suggest you check out CHGO as they provide amazing content on a varitey of platforms.
Trevis Gipson Still Hasn't Reached His Potential
His performance on Saturday all but confirms what I believed: Gipson is talented enough and deserves a place on the Bears roster. The addition of Yannick Ngakoue might have pushed Gipson down the chart, but placing him at the bottom was likely a tactic to motivate him. This tactic obviously worked, as Gipson had an excellent game with 5 tackles, 3 hits on the quarterback, 1 sack, and around 5 total pressures.
If he keeps this up, he'll likely be on the roster for week 1. However, he needs to maintain this level of play against stronger opponents, in particular first team caliber players. He sometimes struggles against tougher competition. That should come soon as the Bears will practice together with the Indianapolis Colts before their second preseason game in week 2 next Saturday.
