Chicago Bears fans probably aren't familiar with the name LaMar Campbell? However, players certainly are. The man is affectionately known as "Soup" has been the Director of Player Engagement for the franchise since 2017. His primary duty is to help players stay motivated towards their goals, both on and off the field. He helps them further their educations if they didn't graduate from college and also talks to them about career options after football.
It's a great job to have. People probably don't remember that Campbell played in the NFL himself. He spent five seasons with the Detroit Lions from 1998 to 2002, starting 18 games over that span. His career wasn't all that memorable. However, he did have one shining moment. Jeff Joniak talked to him on Bears All-Access about what he's been up to this offseason. The conversation shifted briefly to discussing an interesting fact.
Campbell had one interception in his career. Joniak joked he had hoped it was off fellow show host Jim Miller. After laughing, Campbell revealed who the actual victim was. Safe to say it's rather serendipitous he ended up with the Bears organization.
"I got it from Brett Favre because you know he threw them to everybody back then so I'm not going to take too much credit for that."
Chicago Bears never get tired of trolling Brett Favre
It's hardly a secret that Favre is one of the great villains in Bears history. A man who tortured them for over a decade with the Packers. So any chance they get to take jabs at him, they'll do it. The 2000 season was a disappointing one for Green Bay. Things got off to a bad start as they went 2-3 through their first five games. They needed a win in Detroit to settle themselves before hosting the always-tough San Francisco.
Things unraveled fast. Favre lost two fumbles through the first 20 minutes of the first half. Then he put the rotten cherry on the spoiled sundae when he fired at pass that Campbell stepped right in front of to take 42 yards the other way for a score. Detroit won 31-24 and it was never really that close. The Packers spent the rest of the season trying to claw out of that hole. They finished 9-7 and missed the playoffs again.
It seems rather fitting that Campbell found his first job in an NFL front office with the team who hates Favre the most.
