The Chicago Bears will likely be seeking both a new head coach and a new quarterback at the same time in 2021. The last time this was the case came in 2017. Unfortunately, GM Ryan Pace made a critical mistake. He drafted a quarterback that his head coach didn't want. It's well-documented John Fox wasn't a Trubisky fan. He wanted Deshaun Watson. That blunder has continued to haunt the team ever since.
Nothing is more important to a modern NFL team than that between the quarterback and the head coach. When it's harmonious, things tend to go pretty well. See Sean McVay and Jared Goff or Patrick Mahomes and Andy Reid or Pete Carroll and Russell Wilson. This is something the Bears just haven't quite grasped for most of their recent history.
That is why when they conduct their head coaching search next month, they need to make sure the next guy has major say on who his QB will be. Here are some combinations that would make sense for the team.

Chicago Bears have several ways they could go about this
Zach Wilson and Joe Brady
Brady first broke out onto the coaching scene in 2019 as offensive coordinator at LSU. With Joe Burrow at the helm, a heady and mobile passer with great accuracy, he set the college record books ablaze en route to a national championship. He seems to be at his best when he has a quarterback who can sit back in shotgun with receivers spread out and then surgically pick apart defenses. Wilson has the same type of accuracy and mobility out of BYU. Along with the needed field vision to do just that.Kyle Trask and Arthur Smith
Smith had to re-design the offense when the Tennesee Titans made the shift from Marcus Mariota to Ryan Tannehill at quarterback. They went to more running the football with lots of play action. Tannehill was perfect for that style and has revived his career over the past year and a half. That style of system would fit Trask well. He can be equally good under center or in shotgun. If you can give him a clean pocket to throw, he'll slice up defenses almost at will as he's done through 2020 for Florida.Trey Lance and Greg Roman
Colin Kaepernick. Tyrod Taylor. Lamar Jackson. It's obvious by this point that Roman has a particular type of quarterback who works best in his system. All three of those men found their biggest career success under his watch. If anybody in the 2021 class fits it, that'll be Lance. Right now he is much more of a running quarterback. He's terrific with his legs, able to pick up big chunks on scrambles or designed runs. Combine that with his understated arm and he can be even better than Jackson if he develops properly. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iXGA4V1gQ_A&ab_channel=NFLSam Darnold and Brian Daboll
Daboll has done some incredible work with Josh Allen in Buffalo. The former Wyoming QB was a wild stallion of sorts. He had incredible ability but was clearly raw and people weren't sure whether somebody could harness it. Daboll has done exactly that, transforming him into an MVP contender this year. Sam Darnold is much the same. A bucking bronco who still hasn't been tamed because of bad coaching in New York. Give him to Daboll and see if he can work that same magic he did on Allen.Mac Jones and Brandon Staley
His play at Alabama has been outstanding this year, but Jones will still have his doubters because of his general lack of elite traits. His size, arm strength, and mobility can all be called average. That said, his processor and accuracy are both very good. He feels like the type of QB who can be a great complementary guy if put in the right system. Staley comes from the Sean McVay coaching tree with that heavy focus on running the ball and play action. He'll know exactly how to build around Jones while also helping him with a good defense as well. Classic Chicago Bears football.Comments
