The Chicago Bears have lined up interviews with four potential offensive coordinator candidates to replace Luke Getsy. Each of those names has certain things in common. They all have previous playcalling experience, which was a major criticism of the Getsy hire two years ago. Each man also has spent time learning and coaching the Shanahan/McVay wide-zone system that remains a proven commodity around the league. That is a reason the Bears hired Getsy. Clearly, they're hoping for system continuity.
However, something else is interesting about their target list. If the Bears were keen on moving forward with Justin Fields, it doesn't feel like these guys would be the ones to go for. Why? Here is each coordinator and the list of prominent quarterbacks they've worked with to date. See if you notice similarities.
Shane Waldron
- Jared Goff
- Geno Smith
Klint Kubiak
- Kirk Cousins
- Brock Purdy
Liam Coen
- Will Levis
- Matthew Stafford
Greg Olson
- Josh Freeman
- Blake Bortles
- Derek Carr
All of those players are noted for good size, strong arms, and excellent work from the pocket. If we hold to that profile, it actually points toward one quarterback in the upcoming draft class, and it's not Caleb Williams.
Are the Chicago Bears quietly preparing to take Drake Maye?
It is way too early to make such a declaration. Poles, the coaches, and the scouts have tons of work to do over the next two months with the Senior Bowl, scouting combine, and private workouts. They will research these quarterbacks to ridiculous degrees. So much can change in that time. Still, there are reasons to think Maye might be their primary target. The first is mentioned above. Their offensive coordinator targets all have experience working with a quarterback of his style. Next is the talent.
Most agree that Maye is the most physically gifted prospect in this class. He is 6'4, 230 lbs, and boasts an arm that draws comparisons to Justin Herbert and Josh Allen. Remember, Poles has come across as a GM who is big on physical traits. He likes to draft players with high ceilings. There is nothing Maye can't do on a football field from a physical perspective. If he passes the personal and football character tests during his meetings with the Chicago Bears, it would not be shocking if he was their pick.
