Could the Chicago Bears end up drafting a quarterback high next month? Sure. Anything is possible given their current situation with Mitch Trubisky. That said, recent activity over the past two months suggests instead they might be monitoring the developmental options in this year's crop. They already seem to like FIU's James Morgan, whom they've watched closely since the East-West Shrine Game. The same goes for Division III standout Broc Rutter. Now another name has joined those ranks in Jacob Knipp of Northern Colorado.
Jordan Reid of The Draft Network reported that the Bears were in attendance on the school's pro day to watch the 6'4 kid go through drills. He has a nice arm for throwing the ball, delivers accurate passes and isn't afraid to be aggressive.
Yet what might be most impressive about him is his resilience.
From the cerebral mind to his natural leadership skills and his uncanny feel for the position, everyone has already recognized the potential that he possesses. Even though he's been severely bitten by the injury bug in the past, Knipp's name remains atop every major FCS award category and watchlist.
It's not any award, the notoriety, nor accolades that keeps the Bears team captain going forward though. There's plenty of factors that he's looking forward to in his last season donning the blue, gold, and white colors.
"It's really simple for me. I'm just really excited to play football. I'm done thinking about injuries and the past. Right now, I'm just excited to play football and be a part of this team, group of guys, and to get out there, and sling the ball around."
Bears could see Jacob Knipp as undrafted target
Knipp endured two injuries to his non-throwing shoulder in college. Injuries that ended his seasons and forced him to seek a sixth year of eligibility in order to chase his dream of playing in the NFL. Despite not being on the best team (Northern Colorado finished 2-10), he still had his bright moments. This included throwing for over 400 yards against Northern Arizona and 390 yards with three touchdowns against North Dakota.
His final stat line of 2,869 yards, 16 touchdowns, and 12 interceptions doesn't tell the full story. This kid has talent and is lauded for his toughness and leadership. If given time and coaching from an NFL-caliber staffs, he could turn into one of the big surprises of this 2020 crop of quarterbacks. Odds are the Bears will have a shot to bring him in as an undrafted free agent at the end of April.
