He won't go down in history as one of the franchise's best, but David Montgomery was a bright spot for the Chicago Bears during dark times. He was the heart and soul of the offense since he walked in the door in 2019. Letting him walk in free agency this past spring was necessary but tough at the same time. He may have some bitter feelings about it, which is typical in such situations. That said, it's nice to see him finally having success with a good team up in Detroit. The best part is he's still helping the Bears despite no longer being employed by them.
He hammered the Green Bay Packers last week for three touchdowns. Watching them lose is always a treat. This week, Montgomery gave an assist to the Bears' 2024 draft prospects. Chicago holds two 1st round picks next spring. One is their own. The other is the Carolina Panthers' by way of the D.J. Moore trade. After the Bears' big win in Washington on Thursday, Carolina is the only winless team remaining in the league. Their prospects for changing that don't look great, especially after Montgomery set the tone with a 42-yard touchdown run.
David Montgomery no doubt hopes to help in another way, too.
That is by beating the Bears twice in their two upcoming meetings with the Lions. At the time of writing this, Detroit was already up 14-0. Presuming that lead holds, the Panthers will drop to 0-5. A team with a 0-4 record is said to have a greater than 50% chance of landing the #1 pick. Going 0-5 no doubt bumps that up even further. The worst part is it doesn't get any easier for them moving forward. Miami is up next week. Then they have Houston and Indianapolis, both of whom have played well this season.
It would be shocking if the Bears don't at least end up with a top-5 pick from Carolina after the season ends. Seeing David Montgomery contribute to that effort is fun. Facing him a few weeks from now will be less fun. The Lions will almost certainly feed him in both matchups, and he will be running hard. Fans shouldn't be surprised if he has strong performances. Then again, it's a win-win regardless. Losing to him helps their draft projections. Beating him hurts a division rival.
