Dazz Newsome isn't having the same rookie experience as others in his draft class. After a solid start in OTAs, things went sideways for him when he broke his collarbone. This sidelined him for weeks, not returning until training camp had already begun. It must've been difficult to sit helplessly on the sideline. Especially knowing other receivers were vying for the few open roster spots.
Despite this, the 6th round pick remains undeterred he is back and regaining his previous flow. He's also taken the opportunity to reconnect with Justin Fields. The two established a bond even during the NFL draft and it blossomed during rookie minicamps. Newsome has grown more accustomed to what sort of player the quarterback is. By the sound of it? He's beyond impressed. A perfect encapsulation of this was his comments when asked if he is looking forward to seeing what Fields can do this preseason.
It sounds like the Miami Dolphins should be nervous.

Fields has continued to string together a number of strong practices. Not only is he showcasing his trademark athleticism, but he's also delivering a series of impressive strikes through the air. Some of them coming against the Bears' number one defense. If that weren't enough? He is also limiting his mistakes, throwing far fewer interceptions than one would expect of a rookie. All the while his maturity continues to shine through. He's constantly instructing receivers on routes whenever there are miscommunications. He doesn't sweat mistakes when they happen. Best of all, he never stops asking questions. Whether it's the coaches or his more experienced teammates, Fields is an absolute sponge for information.Dazz Newsome may need Fields' help in weeks to come
Right now his own status on the roster is becoming a question. While he is a draft pick, which can garner some favor among the team brass, he's only a 6th rounder. Players taken that late get cut more often than people think. Newsome isn't in trouble due to his ineptitude but more the ascension of several contenders at the position. While he was sitting out, a number of other receivers have stood out in practices. Jon'Vea Johnson, Rodney Adams, and Chris Lacy being among them. Looking ahead? There are likely four spots on the depth chart locked up at wide receiver. Allen Robinson, Darnell Mooney, Marquise Goodwin, and Damiere Byrd being the four. That leaves only two spots remaining at most for Dazz Newsome to snag. Not a lot of wiggle room. Thankfully he is in luck. As the preseason approaches, he'll have several opportunities to showcase his skill. Partly by playing with Fields and also by fielding punt returns.Something he was known for at North Carolina.
Newsome does have a reputation for delivering in big moments. Perhaps this added pressure of competition will give him a nice push to elevate his game. Something the Bears are no doubt hoping for. When everybody fears for their jobs, that is when the performance level of the team elevates.Comments
