The Chicago Bears are in the market for a quarterback. That much seems obvious at this point. Mitch Trubisky regressed in a big way last season, showing many of the same issues that have plagued him since his rookie year. On top of that, both Chase Daniel and Tyler Bray are free agents. This leaves the QB depth chart wide open. Hence the rampant speculation that the team will add somebody new to the mix. When it comes to the draft? One of the most persistent names mentioned is Jalen Hurts.
ESPN is the most recent to do this. Jeff Dickerson mentioned the Oklahoma quarterback as one of the primary players the Bears must watch going into the scouting combine.
"QB Jalen Hurts, Oklahoma: ESPN NFL draft analyst Mel Kiper Jr. put a fourth-round grade on Hurts, who finished second in the Heisman voting. After starring at Alabama for two years, Hurts lost his job to Tua Tagovailoa in 2018 and then transferred to Oklahoma, where he finished his collegiate career in spectacular style by throwing for 32 touchdowns and rushing for 20 touchdowns. Hurts, who will work out strictly at quarterback during the combine, will likely be a developmental player as a rookie."
The truth is Hurts has made this far on name power more than anything. He is not going to solve anything for the Bears at quarterback nor make this offense any better.
Jalen Hurts is a poor man's Dak Prescott
There is no question that Hurt is a great story. He overcame a lot at Alabama where he won a national championship, only to lose the starting job to Tua Tagovailoa. He then transferred to Oklahoma where he had a good year and got the Sooners to the CFB playoffs. All fine accomplishments. The problem is he was greatly aided by two of the best programs in college football. If one were to watch his film, they'd see an athlete who can run really well but is average at best as a passer.
His arm strength is okay. His accuracy? That's a persistent issue. He often struggles to put the ball on his receivers down the field and shows erratic ball placement. Everything about his style of play and temperament says he's another Dak Prescott. Only he doesn't have the same natural arm talent. So why would the Bears use a 2nd round pick on that? Especially when wide receiver and offensive line are viewed as the most loaded positions in the entire draft.
Hurts honestly doesn't bring anything to the table that is better than what the Bears have in Trubisky. Both can run. Both work really hard and are vocal leaders. What does he offer that's different? Nothing. This is why the team must stay away from him.
