With free agency basically over for the Chicago Bears, they've begun preparations for the NFL draft in full. This presents a good opportunity for the team to introduce the newest faces to the fans. That is why the team has scheduled a 10 a.m. media conference on Friday, April 3rd. It will be the first time in months that head coach Matt Nagy and GM Ryan Pace have gotten in front of the cameras. They'll get a chance to talk about the new additions.
This might seem like a harmless move. The Bears have rolled out free agent signings to the public before. However, it's a bit different this time. Why? One of the names expected to be available is Nick Foles. The veteran quarterback Chicago just traded for last month. Why is this significant? Well for months the Bears have insisted they're going to give Mitch Trubisky every chance to keep his job. That they're merely looking for a backup who can be competition.
If this were the case with Foles, then why make him available at all if he's supposed to be the backup? It feels like this is an admission by the team that despite what they've tried to say, it's fairly certain that barring something unexpected Foles will be the starter come opening day this fall.
Chicago Bears aren't fooling anybody on this
No doubt Pace and Nagy will deflect any questions about a decision being made. They'll stick to the script. It's a competition for this summer. In truth though, the Bears didn't give up a 4th round pick and guarantee Foles $21 million for him to sit on the bench. They brought him in to play. It feels like Trubisky would have to look like a completely different quarterback to hang onto that spot at this point.
Anything is possible. Still, the winds are blowing in Foles' direction. He knows the new coaching staff even better than Trubisky. He's got the Super Bowl ring. It truly is his job to lose. The only question left is can the Bears win with him in a tough NFC? They have the defense to do it. Foles will have to show people that what happened in Jacksonville was less about him and more about the dysfunctional team he left behind.
