Chicago Bears fans are struggling to find positive moments lately. Their team is 2-7. The quarterback situation is as unsettled as ever. The head coach looks completely overmatched by his responsibilities. Eight games remain in the season, and the playoffs are already a long-lost idea. Still, some proper digging can sometimes yield results. Take Chase Claypool, for example. The Bears traded the disgruntled wide receiver a few weeks ago, tired of his lackadaisical effort and maturity issues.
Miami felt they might get good use out of him as a reserve receiver and maybe a part-time tight end. So far, the results haven't been what they hoped for. Across three games, Claypool has one catch for 15 yards. He's also continued his reputation for lackluster blocking, inconsistent route-running, and clearly has no idea what he is doing half the time. It appears Dolphins fans have already caught on to the con by now. With the team 1-2 since he arrived, they've started to notice the shortcomings and are already tired of it.
Chase Claypool may struggle to find work after this.
The season began with thoughts that he might break through in 2023, knowing he's hunting for a contract extension. It is incredible to think he went from that to traded and essentially a backup in the space of two months. Teams only gamble on talent so many times before they realize the player's drive and mental makeup don't make the effort worth it. Claypool has never come across as somebody who loves football. He plays it because he's a ridiculous athlete. The problem is everybody is a great athlete in the NFL.
Once defenses figured out his weaknesses, they've been exploiting them with greater and greater results. His inability to evolve his game says it all. Getting traded twice in less than a year is a bad look for any player. No big contract extension is coming. If anything, Chase Claypool may struggle to find work at all moving forward. That is how radioactive he's becoming in the eyes of other teams. When guys like Mike Tomlin and Mike McDaniel can't get the most out of you, that says it all.
