The Chicago Bears saw what everybody else did on Super Bowl Sunday. Patrick Mahomes and his elite Kansas City Chiefs offense completing their mission to finally bring Andy Reid a championship. It showcased how great that team is, and also just how far away the Bears are from them. Outside of Allen Robinson, there is no player on their offense who could be considered a mainstay for the future. Cody Whitehair has an argument as well. Mitch Trubisky? Anthony Miller? James Daniels? David Montgomery? All have potential but still tons to prove.
There is no telling what they'll do in free agency given their limited cap space. Word on their intentions is basically zero. The draft? That might be a different story. Insider Matt Miller of Bleacher Report released his first full mock draft of the offseason. His final list for the Bears showed a clear intent from start to finish. That is doing anything and everything possible to fix the 27th ranked offense in the NFL.
- Brycen Hopkins, TE, Purdue
- Isaiah Wilson, OT, Georgia
- Jauan Jennings, WR, Tennessee
- Steven Montez, QB, Colorado
- Shyheim Carter, S, Alabama
- Trevis Gipson, EDGE, Tulsa
- Calvin Throckmorton, OL, Oregon
Chicago Bears would significantly benefit from this draft
All things considered, this wouldn't be a bad draft for the Bears. Hopkins is an athletic tight end with speed and strong hands, capable of gashing defenses from one side of the field to the other. Not a great blocker but exactly what this team needs as a pass target. Wilson would bring some power and nasty to the running game. An heir apparent to Bobby Massie at right tackle who can become a good NFL starter once his fundamentals are polished.
Jennings is probably one of the more overlooked receivers in this class. He's not a speed demon but he's 6'3, runs with authority, attacks the ball in the air, and embraces his responsibility as a blocker. Montez would be described as a perfect project QB. Big, athletic and boasting a strong arm. He has shown glimpses at Colorado by making some special throws. However, he struggled with inconsistency and needs a ton of work on his mechanics.
Carter will be a special teams guy immediately with enough upside to become a strong safety on defense thanks to his build and aggressiveness. He's not a bad athlete and has instincts for the position. Gipson is a bit of a late bloomer as an edge rusher. His 2019 was a breakout year with eight sacks and 15 tackles for a loss. The Bears actually showed interest in him at the East-West Shrine game and he is their favorite team to play with on Madden because of Khalil Mack.
Last but not least is Throckmorton.
Aside from the excellent last name, he developed a reputation at Oregon for his nastiness and power. He's also a good technician who is rarely fooled by anything. The problem is he isn't the most nimble guy in the world and suffers from balance issues. His future is likely inside at guard. It's not a "star-studded" group but the Bears would have reasons for optimism if it played out this way.
