Eddie Jackson didn't look like himself in 2020. In fact, one could argue he didn't look himself in 2019 either. The confident and incredibly instinctive safety that became an All-Pro in 2018 appeared indecisive. He wasn't playing with the usual aggression that made him one of the best ballhawk safeties in the NFL. There is no doubt that last season was his career bottom, finishing without a single interception.
The guy just seemed like he was in a funk. One he couldn't get out of. This led to questions. One of the most prominent being this. Was Jackson's success due less to his own ability and more to Vic Fangio's excellent scheme? It's hard not to make the connection since Jackson immediately started to regress after the former Bears defensive coordinator left. No doubt the safety has heard takes like this.
He hasn't taken them well.
Jackson has always been a player with a chip on his shoulder. So this upcoming 2021 season is going to be big for him. The Bears handed him that massive contract last year because they believe he is a long-term part of their core on defense. If he delivers another dud like before? His future in Chicago will inevitably get called into question. So there is a lot riding on the next four months. Luckily for Jackson, he's surrounded by some outstanding teammates. They've been supportive of him throughout this process. One who made the biggest impact of all this offseason was Khalil Mack. The superstar pass rusher had some advice for him a few weeks ago. Words that completely changed the way Jackson thinks about how to play the game. Could it end up being his light bulb moment? The Hall of Fame defensive back went through a bit of a career dip himself at one point. Through his first three seasons, Woodson had 10 interceptions. However, he managed a mere seven in the five seasons after that. Many wondered if the cornerback had peaked when he left Oakland to sign in Green Bay. Upon arrival, it became apparent that Woodson had something to prove and he would have to make sure he did it himself. Over the next six seasons with the Packers, he collected 37 interceptions.Great players find a way to make plays.
Eddie Jackson didn't stop being talented. He's still 27-years old and was a Pro Bowler two years ago. Even last season there were glimpses of that playmaking ability. Two touchdowns were called back due to penalties. It isn't a question of whether he lost that ability. It is a matter of him setting it free. Stop thinking so much. Go out there and do what you do best. The Bears promoting Fangio disciple Sean Desai to run the defense only helps matters. He has championed his players to seek the turnover at every opportunity. If you feel like there is a chance to get the ball? Go get it. That mentality is perfect for Jackson. With a little help from the pass rush, this could be a major rebound year for him.Comments
