Shaun O'Hara knows what good football teams are supposed to look like. He was a three-time Pro Bowl center and one-time All-Pro for the New York Giants. He won a Super Bowl in 2007. So he has a pretty strong eye for when teams make smart moves, even if the wider mainstream media kind of glosses over it. So when asked what his favorite under the radar move of 2020 free agency so far was? It was an easy answer. The Chicago Bears signing Robert Quinn.
O'Hara is well aware of the constant talk about Nick Foles and the Bears quarterback situation. However, he also knows about life with an inconsistent QB. Those times require having a capable defense with a strong pass rush to see the team through difficult times. Just like his Giants did in '07. No doubt he saw visions of that team when the Bears moved to pair Quinn with Khalil Mack and Akiem Hicks.
Robert Quinn helps to fortify scary pass rush
Clearly what GM Ryan Pace and the coaching staff said about Leonard Floyd the past two months weren't telling the real story. After finishing so strong in 2018, hopes were high the former 1st round pick was finally ready to break out last year. Instead he had just three sacks including one in the final 15 games. It was a colossal disappointment and one the team could no longer ignore. So they sent him packing and brought in Quinn, fresh off 11.5 sacks for the Dallas Cowboys.
He has 80 for his career.
The Bears got themselves a legitimate pass rusher. Did they lose something in the coverage and run defense department. Sure? Does it matter in the grand scheme? No. This is a quarterback-driven league. The best teams are the ones that can get those guys on the ground. Look at San Francisco and Kansas City last year for reminders of that. This was the right move.
