Matt Nagy is in uncharted territory at the moment. The Sunday night game last week marked the first time in years he'd coached in a game that meant nothing in the grand scheme to his team. That meant his job was even under a brighter spotlight. Could he get the Chicago Bears to at least perform with a sense of urgency against a surging Kansas City Chiefs team in primetime? The answer was an emphatic no.
The Bears were boat raced pretty much right away. They fell behind 17-0 in the first half and it never got close after that. At the center of the misery was Nagy's vaunted offense which managed a grand total of three points. This marks the second time this season his unit scored that in a home game. His quarterback Mitch Trubisky threw for just 158 yards and continues to show all sorts of the same flaws that Nagy was supposed to have corrected by now.
Former six-time Pro Bowler Olin Kreutz, for his part, believes the entire situation from the ineptitude to the sloppiness and lack of discipline reflects poorly on the head coach. Not only that, but Nagy's unwillingness to be accountable for the failures is another issue that can't be ignored.
Matt Nagy must embrace change to save his job in 2020
There is one piece of good news from Nagy's perspective. He'll likely still have time to fix this. Regardless of what happens in the season finale, the odds favor him returning for a third season in 2020. He's built up enough credibility to warrant more time to figure things out, and he knows he has to. He was hired by the Bears to win games, yes. However, he was also hired to fix their perennial woes on offense. After two years, he hasn't done this in any respect. They were 23rd overall in 2018 and have dropped to 28th in 2019.
If he wants to save his job and win a Super Bowl as he continues to claim, then he'll have to do something that is often the hardest for a head coach to embrace. He has to change. Whatever he's tried this year isn't working from either the coaching or the personnel standpoint. Nagy can't possibly go into next year thinking that no changes to either will yield a different result. That is the definition of insanity. Changes are needed and they may have to be extensive if he wants to achieve the desired results.
