The quarterback competition is fully underway now for the Chicago Bears. With two of their 14 padded practices in the books, it appears Mitch Trubisky and Nick Foles are deadlocked at one "win" apiece. Both have had their rough moments, which is to be expected. At the same time, each has showcased what makes them so appealed.
Trubisky has the mobility, quick release, and improvisational skill. Foles has the intelligence, size, and relentless calm amidst the chaos. One constantly looks for the big play. The other doesn't mind facilitating to others. Thus far neither has had true "wow" moments but it seems they're taking this competition deadly serious.
So who will win? Head coach Matt Nagy isn't ready to answer that and probably won't for the next couple of weeks. However, former head coach Brian Billick had no problem offering his own opinion. A Super Bowl-winning coach himself for the Baltimore Ravens, he's no stranger to quarterback competitions. Based on his personal assessment, there is no question in his mind.
Trubisky will be the starter opening day at Ford Field.
Mitch Trubisky expected to keep the job, at first anyway
This is a scenario that a lot of people seem to be buying into. That the Bears want to give Trubisky one last chance to figure things out. If the light goes on when the season starts? Terrific. If not, they have Foles waiting in the bullpen to take over. It's an exact duplicate setup of what the Tennessee Titans did last season. They started with Marcus Mariota, he struggled and so they went to Ryan Tannehill who came in and played really well.
It isn't a bad plan. Then again Nagy isn't Mike Vrabel. His view of the situation is likely different. The Bears head coach has never been shy about making bold decisions. If he feels Trubisky still isn't showing the traits necessary to run his offense the way he wants it? Don't be surprised if Foles ends up getting the nod.
