There are plenty of skeptics out there of the Chicago Bears acquiring Nick Foles via trade. While they concede the team got him for cheaper than expected thanks to a restructuring of his massive contract from Jacksonville, it doesn't necessarily solve their quarterback issue. Foles has been a backup most of his career and the bulk of his successes in the NFL have come from off the bench. He's never sustained a full 16-game season as a starter.
This due to either being benched or more often getting injured.
Nobody doubts his leadership or his commitment as a teammate. What they doubt is him being able to sustain solid play for a full season. Something the Bears are going to need if they wish to get back to the playoffs. Can he actually do that in Chicago? Former NFL quarterback Bruce Gradkowski believes so, and a big reason for that is his tight connections with the coaching staff.
"I think Nick Foles is a confidence guy. If he has the coaching staff around him that believes in him and let him play gunslinger-ish like Ryan Fitzpatrick, where he’s going to force a few throws but you’re going to live with it but sometimes he’s going to make some spectacular throws — that’s Nick Foles.
He’s been with Nagy. He’s been with Bill Lazor, He’s been with (John) DeFilippo. He has a lot of familiarity with the coaching staff so he could go in with a different type of confidence level."
Nick Foles has the full trust of Nagy and his staff
There's a reason Foles accepted his significant contract restructure. It was to make the trade to Chicago possible. Why? He wanted to play for Matt Nagy. The Bears head coach is renowned not only for being a strong offensive mind but an even better motivator. Players love him thanks to his relentless positivity. For a quarterback like Foles who is at his best when feeling confident, it does feel like Nagy is a perfect fit.
Is it any coincidence that Foles' career came back from the dead when he worked with Nagy for a year in Kansas City in 2016? Sometimes what appears to be a rather questionable fit on paper turns out to be perfect in reality. A quarterback who works best when he has somebody pumping him up. A head coach known for constantly encouraging players. It really could be an ideal match.
