Speculation is running rampant with the Chicago Bears lately. No surprise. It's the offseason and that tends to happen. For this team, it's all focused on one thing. What will GM Ryan Pace do at quarterback? He stated with little chance to be misinterpreted that the plans for his team are for Mitch Trubisky to be the starter in 2020. He went on record. There was no disputing it. Yet some struggle to take him at his word since Pace has often said one thing and done another.
However, there are plenty of people out there who believe he was telling the total truth in this case. Longtime analyst Rich Eisen was one of them. Pace can't afford to step back now. He committed everything to Trubisky. If he doesn't follow through, it could threaten to wreck all of his credibility in the building, especially with ownership. That is why it is felt he'll devote every resource possible to upgrading the roster around Trubisky.
Matt Bowen, a former player himself and top analyst for ESPN seems to agree. When asked about the possibility of the Bears drafting a QB, he made it clear it's possible but wouldn't bank on Pace doing it. Or bring any competition at all for that matter.
Ryan Pace is a gambler and he may roll the dice again
One thing about Pace that has proven consistently true is he's loyal to his own players and he's not afraid to take risks. He gave up four total draft picks to secure Trubisky, taking him over the much more proven Deshaun Watson and of course Patrick Mahomes. He did so because he felt in his heart that the young quarterback was exactly what the Bears needed to become a consistent contender in the future.
For a time that seemed to ring true. Trubisky had a strong 2018 season that resulted in a trip to the Pro Bowl and a playoff berth. Last year though has many believing that season was nothing more than a flash in the pan. He's just not cut out to be a true professional quarterback. Too many things need to be perfect in order for him to have success.
Pace doesn't believe that. He thinks Trubisky is still young and learning the position. Given a little more time and a better supporting cast around him, things will turn out how the Bears want it. The next two months will be truly eye-opening.
