Let's put it this way. The Chicago Bears are not the trendy pick for making the Super Bowl in 2020. As long as they have Mitch Trubisky at quarterback, there isn't an expert on the planet who would risk making such a prediction after watching the team struggle so much this past season. Then again, every year is different. One former player was ready to put his card on the table with the chips squarely down on Chicago for Super Bowl LV.
Emmanuel Acho, who works for ESPN on the Get Up television program, was polled along with three other experts to make a pick for a team that didn't reach the playoffs in 2019 to make the Super Bowl this year. A similar route taken by the San Francisco 49ers. Most of the answers were rather typical. Former GM Mike Tannenbaum took the Pittsburgh Steelers in spite of their own curious QB situation. Jeremy Fowler and Mike Greenberg both took the Dallas Cowboys, now under the direction of former Packers head coach Mike McCarthy.
Acho? He went with the Bears. A bold pick to be certain but one he feels is justified. While he acknowledged the problems with Trubisky, he felt the presence of that elite defense already wins half the battle. If they can bolster the offense enough accentuate Trubisky's strengths and hide his weaknesses? They can make a run.
Chicago Bears know they have enough to do it
Ask Bears players and they'll all say they feel this team is good enough to do it. What happened last year was less a sign of inadequacy and more an education on how much they still have to learn about navigating the highs and lows of the NFL. Their inability to get off to good starts, coupled with health issues led to a loss in momentum midway through the season that cost a chance at the playoffs. It's not like they were out of it early. This team was 7-6 at one point and rolling.
They can hang with good teams when they play efficiently. Odds are GM Ryan Pace will dedicate most of this offseason towards improving their 27th ranked offense and keeping the defense as much together as possible. If they check enough boxes and Trubisky can at least get back to the level he reached in 2018? The Bears are good enough to do it. It's a matter of whether they're willing to embrace the grind to get there.
