By rights the Chicago Bears draft of 2019 shouldn't be any good. They had only five picks to begin with including no 1st or 2nd rounders. Two teams ended up with three 1st rounders alone. Others with multiple 2nds. Their drafts would end up getting praised because that's how this typically goes. More picks equals better drafts, right?
Not according to one prominent NFL personality. Dan Orlovsky is a former quarterback who played for five different teams across 12 years in the league. He knows the game well, having spent time with some great players and great coaches. Since retiring he has become one of the more respected analysts in the field thanks to his knowledge and attention to detail.
So it must've been a surprise when he listed the Bears as one of the teams having the best weekend in terms of drafting right along side Arizona and the Jets. Teams with top five picks.
Chicago Bears draft has already landed two potential starters
The draft began when the Bears gave up their 5th in 2019 and a 4th in 2020 to move up from #87 to #73 with the Patriots to grab Iowa State running back David Montgomery. They then waited until late in the 4th round on Saturday to take Georgia wide receiver Riley Ridley at #126 overall. Orlovsky was stunned they were able to get such value at those picks.
Ridley has been compared to both Emmanuel Sanders and James Jones. Montgomery draws connections to Kareem Hunt and Michael Turner. Those were all very good football players in the NFL. Three of them Pro Bowlers. If this proves to be true, then the Bears just scored two incredible steals under difficult circumstances.
Keep in mind Orlovsky played with the likes of Andre Johnson, Calvin Johnson, Reggie Wayne, and Arian Foster. He doesn't throw such praise around without knowing what he's talking about. Bears fans should be excited about this.
