The Chicago Bears currently have record of 3 wins and 8 losses this season. In this article, I'll be determining which of their losses is the worst. However, I won't be evaluating all eight losses, for the sake of my sanity, but specifically focusing on the ones where Justin Fields started at quarterback, excluding the Vikings game where he got injured.
I'll be assessing each loss based on a few key factors:
Expectations: What were the expectations heading into the game? The higher the expectations, the more impactful the loss is likely to be.
How did the Bears lose? Was it a close game, did they choke or blow a big lead, or were they simply outplayed?
Now, let's into into the list.
5. Week 2: Lost to the Tampa Bay Bucaneers 27-17
Taking the fifth spot on the list is the loss against the Bucs. In this game, I believed the Bears had a chance, and they remained competitive until the final moments. Though it was disappointing at the time, it marked an improvement compared to their week 1 loss to Green Bay, which we'll discuss later.
4. Week 3: Got blown out by the Kanas City Chiefs 41-10
I attended this game in-person and Taylor Swift was also present. It actually marked the start of the Travis Kelce and Taylor Swift dating rumors, and the Chiefs absolutely dominated the Bears. The performance was embarrassing. In my opinion, the Bears seemed to have lost the game before even taking a snap. It was a regrettable experience, and I'm still upset about spending money to witness that game live.
3. Week 4: Epic collapse vs the Denver Broncos 31-28
In a breakout performance, Justin Fields threw for 335 yards and 4 touchdowns, also rushing for 25 yards. This game marked a turning point in his season to an extent. Despite the Bears holding a 28-7 lead late in the game, the Broncos mounted an insane comeback. In a crucial moment, with a chance for a game-winning drive, Fields threw an interception while targeting Cole Kmet. The miscommunication on the route and the ball placement not aligning with Kmet's path resulted in the Bears wasting another impressive outing by Fields. At the time, it seemed like the worst loss of the season for the Bears, but surprisingly, there were two more losses ahead that surpassed it. Lucky us.
2. Week 11: Historic loss vs the Detroit Lions 31-26.
This game is recent, and there might be some bias because of that. However, it's worth noting that this was Justin Fields first game back after recovering from a thumb injury. The Chicago Bears faced the 7-2 Detroit Lions and played great football for 56 minutes. Despite their strong performance, the Lions managed to score 15 points in the last 4 minutes, securing a historic comeback win. The Bears dominated in areas like time of possession and won the turnover battle. Unfortunately, the coaching staff reverted to old ways and appeared scared in crucial moments. Surprisingly, this is not the worst loss of the season.
1. Week 1: Blown out at home vs the Green Bay Packers 38-20
Well, if you've made it this far, I appreciate it, and I apologize. This particular game was destined to be the toughest loss of the season. Leading up to week 1, the anticipation was high after the entire off-season buildup. The Packers seemed vulnerable, especially with Aaron Rodgers finally out of the picture. However, the Bears didn't perform well, coming out flat, and Jordan Love played like a future Hall of Famer as the Bears crumbled at home. The aftermath of this loss brought about some dark days, to the point where I considered canceling the rest of the season. This one sucked no other way to put it.
To see how Bears fans felt, I made a poll on Twitter asking everyone to rank the worst loss of the season, and here are the results thus far.
At the time of writing, the Lions meltdown is leading the poll with 41% of over 5,000 votes. It's worth noting that recency bias may significantly influence this result. The Packers loss holds the second position with 30%, and the Broncos follow closely at 24%. The Chiefs trail behind with only 5%, and it's possible that those who voted for that game might have attended the game at Arrowhead and share my feelings of buyers remorse.
