Here's What Makes The New Chicago Bears Offensive Staff Truly Exciting

The Chicago Bears have mostly completed the overhaul of their offensive coaching staff. It was a process that left many surprised, mainly for how GM Ryan Poles and head coach Matt Eberflus were able to secure multiple assistants coveted by other teams. Offensive coordinator Shane Waldron was viewed by many as one of the best available. New quarterback coach Kerry Joseph and wide receiver coach Chris Beatty soon joined him. The biggest surprise was Thomas Brown arriving from Carolina as the new passing game coordinator.

It is a staff that brings a careful blend of youth and experience. However, the most exciting part about this new group is when you dig into their background, particularly those who will have direct ties to the Bears quarterback position. It turns out they all have a track record of elevating it.

Offensive coordinator Shane Waldron

Up until 2018, Waldron hadn't spent much time with quarterbacks. His track record centered on wide receivers, tight ends, and the offensive line. That changed in 2018 when he became the Rams passing game coordinator. What followed was Jared Goff's best season as a pro, throwing for 4,688 yards, 32 touchdowns, and 12 interceptions. Los Angeles reached the Super Bowl that year. Then, upon taking over in Seattle, he got 4,000 yards and 30 touchdowns from supposed former draft bust Geno Smith.

Quarterbacks coach Kerry Joseph

Before jumping to the NFL, Joseph was a former CFL champion making his way as a young offensive coordinator at the FCS level. His influence was immediately felt at his alma mater, McNeese State. In 2015, their QB threw for 13 TDs and nine interceptions. His first year as co-offensive coordinator in 2016, that improved to 23 TDs and seven interceptions. The process repeated at Southeastern Louisiana, where the QB who threw 17 TDs and 13 interceptions the year prior posted 25 and 12, respectively, in Joseph's lone year in 2019.

Passing game coordinator Thomas Brown

Though known mostly for his exploits as a running backs coach, Brown has achieved things beyond that role. He took over as offensive coordinator for the Miami Hurricanes in 2016. Quarterback Brad Kaaya had a disappointing season the previous year, going for 16 touchdowns and five interceptions. Brown got things straightened out and the junior delivered a career-best 27 touchdowns and seven interceptions. That was enough to get him drafted in the 6th round. A year later, he got 31 total touchdowns from Malik Rosier.

If the Chicago Bears' objective was to surround a young quarterback with coaches who have elevated the position in the past, they've succeeded.
