Much has been made of how GM Ryan Poles, head coach Matt Eberflus, and the Chicago Bears organization loved Darnell Wright. They grew fond of him early in the draft process, feeling he had the talent and temperament they needed on their offensive line. He stoned some of the best pass rushers in the SEC, playing with a level of controlled violence they loved. They needed to find out if he was willing to work hard to unlock his vast untapped potential. After surviving a rigorous workout during a private visit, they had their answer. Chicago took Wright 10th overall.
Often overlooked in such a process is how the player himself feels. There are many examples of athletes providing a list of teams they don't want to go to. John Elway refused to join the Baltimore Colts. Eli Manning refused to join the San Diego Chargers. It's well-documented Cedric Benson didn't want to come to Chicago. There was always the risk that Wright might be keen on being a Bear. In truth, it was the opposite. He knew early on that this team was the one he wanted to join. He confided that to head coach Matt Eberflus when he first got to Halas Hall. The latest episode of 1920 Football Drive caught the exchange.
Darnell Wright showed that enthusiasm throughout the video.
He could even see a pep in his step when walking into Eberflus' office. He was where he wanted to be. When something like that happens, you know things are off on the right foot. Coaches won't have to spend extra time trying to win a player over or motivate him. They can focus entirely on all the necessary steps to make him a better football player. The Bears already feel they got the best offensive tackle in this draft. He can be an absolute monster with some refinement in his technical approach.
New teammates have already taken notice of his incredible size and athleticism. The next step is turning Darnell Wright loose in training camp when the pads go on. Poles and Eberflus believe they have a tone-setter on the right side of their line. No doubt he'd love to offer some demonstrations. Bears defensive ends best have their chinstraps buckled. He figures to arrive at training camp full of piss and vinegar.
