Tyrique Stevenson was already on the hot seat dating back to last season. His horrendous actions in the loss to Washington, capped by the baffling trash-talking with fans during the Hail Mary play, left many questioning his maturity and discipline. While the young cornerback played better down the stretch of the season, it did little to help his image. Then things got more complicated. The Chicago Bears hired a new coaching staff. Suddenly, the status of every player on the roster was left in question. New coaches always have certain standards for players they want, meaning Stevenson and others would be under a microscope.
With Jaylon Johnson out, the battle at cornerback has been intense. Everybody knows the All-Pro has a job waiting for him when he returns. The same goes for Kyler Gordon, who has become a swift favorite of defensive coordinator Dennis Allen. That leaves Stevenson as the only starter who is vulnerable. Bears insider Adam Jahns of CHGO poured gas on the flame this week. He believes a legitimate challenger is emerging for Stevenson's sport, and it might already be too late.
Tyrique Stevenson only has himself to blame.
His reputation for lack of discipline started as a rookie in 2023. He had some egregious blown coverages during that time. The Hail Mary moment only seemed to cement it in the public eye. He became a meme overnight. The unfortunate part is he can actually play. Tyrique Stevenson has shown a capacity for high-level production in the NFL. The issue is that coaches seek stability more than anything. They want players they can trust. Nahshon Wright is someone that secondary coach Al Harris has worked with before. He's a good fit for the system and showed flashes of potential in Dallas. Familiarity plus quality play in practice often leads to more opportunities. Stevenson hasn't been bad in training camp. He's had good moments, too. Unfortunately, that might not be enough this time.
