The Chicago Bears have rarely been active at the trade deadline. As of right now, there isn't much rumbling that this will change. Not when the team is 3-4 and still on the fringe of the playoff chase. So here's a hypothetical? What happens if they get blown out again on Sunday against San Francisco, dropping to 3-5? One would have to think the regime starts rethinking its priorities. Namely working to stockpile assets for the future. That means unloading veterans who aren't part of that long-term picture. Allen Robinson might be the biggest of those names.
This isn't something Bears fans care to admit. He's been a terrific wide receiver for this team since arriving in 2018. Sadly, a mixture of quarterback problems and a contract impasse have led to this current situation. One where it is impossible to envision Robinson returning in 2022. If it is a foregone conclusion he will be entering free agency, then it would make sense the team looks to unload him for something in return.
It all depends on the type of offer they get.
Conor Orr thinks there is one that makes all the sense in the world. The insider for Sports Illustrated wrote a column about the upcoming trade deadline. He had a few possibilities highlighted. This would involve Chicago sending Robinson down south to join the quarterback they almost drafted in 2017."Allen Robinson to the Chiefs for a second-round pick The signing of Josh Gordon indicated what we’ve all realized about the Chiefs, that without a sound running game they must upgrade their passing weapon set to the point where it can strangle any secondary. Tyreek Hill and Travis Kelce simply cannot handle that kind of workload anymore. Robinson would provide Patrick Mahomes with a high-volume, reliable possession receiver who has the broken play dexterity to thrive alongside Mahomes. Robinson could pull the Chiefs’ offense out of its rut and ease the burden currently placed on their offensive line."This deal would indeed make sense for both sides. The Chiefs' passing offense has fallen into a rut. Outside of Kelce and Hill, nobody has stepped up this season. It has forced Patrick Mahomes to play a lot more hero ball lately and it's leading to way too many interceptions. Adding Robinson would give them the ideal complementary target to Hill. A safety blanket whenever the big plays aren't there. As for the Bears? They get a good draft pick in return for a player who was leaving anyway. Allen Robinson hasn't been himself this year
Some of that is out of his control. There is a clear lack of chemistry with Justin Fields. A lot of that is due to the two not working together in training camp. However, even when the young quarterback has thrown the ball to him perfectly, Robinson has had some uncharacteristic drops. It just seems like he is out of sorts at times. Not quite as locked in as he was the past two years. Perhaps joining an offense with a proven superstar quarterback like Mahomes is just the thing to snap him out of his funk. The tricky part for Kansas City will be the price tag. They have the draft pick necessary to make such a deal. What they lack is salary cap space. They have less than $3 million according to Over The Cap. So they'd have to do some maneuvering in order to free up the money necessary for that Allen Robinson contract. Then there is the other question.
Are they prepared to give up a 2nd round pick for what could be a half-year rental? That doesn't seem like smart business. So it would be interesting to see if Kansas City might look for some kind of assurance they could secure him to an extension beyond 2021. The logistics are difficult, but not impossible. It will be interesting to see what the Bears do.Comments
