Justin Fields has already said he believes he has done enough to justify another year as the starter for the Chicago Bears. His overall efficiency has improved, he understands the game much better, and the team is winning more games. There was more proof of this on Sunday as the Bears took down the Arizona Cardinals 27-16. Fields threw for a touchdown and ran for another while compiling 267 total yards. His only blemish was an interception in the end zone in the 4th quarter.
It wasn't perfect, but it was enough. Chicago has now won four of their last six games. If not for two painful 4th quarter collapses in Detroit and Cleveland, they would've won all six. Some people feel this proves Fields can play winning football. Sure, he's not the most gracious pocket passer, but he still makes plays. Nobody knows what the Bears will do. Adam Hoge of CHGO doesn't know either, but he is starting to wonder if Fields himself may have an idea. He saw things in the Cardinals game that indicate the quarterback might be prepping for life after Chicago.
Justin Fields isn't stupid.
He understands the situation he is in. The offense still isn't performing at a high enough level. Despite upgrades to the passing attack, his passer rating isn't much different from what it was last year. He also hasn't been as effective on the ground as he was last season. Couple this with the likelihood Chicago ends up with the #1 overall pick, and the odds are far higher GM Ryan Poles will opt for a change at quarterback. That means every game Fields plays until the end of the season is an audition for other teams. Getting hurt won't help his cause, so he's working to protect himself better.
That doesn't mean Justin Fields will stop playing hard. He's not that kind of player or teammate. He will fight to win every game. He still wants to stay in Chicago. That said, he also must face reality. Unless he sweeps the remaining two games and looks sharp doing so, it feels like his days with the Bears are numbered. Most signs point to Poles making a change and trading Fields to a new team. If so, he seems mentally prepared for the possibility.
