One person that probably wasn't happy the Chicago Bears got the #1 overall pick was Justin Fields. Not only did it serve as proof the team lost a lot of games in 2022, but it also opened the door for speculation about his future. Having that pick almost always results in a quarterback being taken. So naturally, multiple analysts and industry insiders have wondered if GM Ryan Poles might pivot at the position, trading Fields and taking a QB of his choice at #1. Plenty of people don't like that. Not after how much the former 1st round pick improved over the course of last season. Jaquan Brisker is one of them.
The rookie safety was quite the revelation for the Bears. Expectations for him were modest as a later 2nd round pick. He immediately stepped in and established himself as a future stalwart on defense, leading the team in sacks and ranking near the top in tackles. Brisker also became more vocal as a locker room leader. What is best for the Bears is at the forefront of his mind. Inevitably the Fields trade rumors got back to him. Suffice it to say, he isn't thrilled about it.
Jaquan Brisker seems to echo the Bears locker room.
He is far from the only player that has expressed the utmost confidence in Fields. These guys would know far more than outside voices about how much the quarterback means to the team. It's easy to see his perspective. Fields established himself as an excellent locker room leader in 2022, guiding the team through a frustrating season. Honestly, it could've been even worse without his play on the field. Fields kept Chicago in so many games, thanks to his highlight reel abilities. If not for defensive breakdowns here and dropped passes there, the Bears likely would've won more games.
It is nice to see a teammate like Jaquan Brisker speak out publicly on the subject. He likely echoes the thoughts of several others at Halas Hall. Fields did enough to earn more time. Another year in Luke Getsy's offense combined with a (hopefully) better supporting cast in 2023 should yield positive results. It comes down to GM Ryan Poles. He holds the decisive card. If he becomes enamored with one of the top QBs in this draft class, he may trade Fields and use the #1 pick to take them. All one can do is hope he makes the right decision.
