The Jay Cutler era appears all but over in Chicago. It didn't end the way many Bears fans wanted. They had desperately hoped Cutler could be their savior. A man who might elevate the franchise back up to elite levels like no QB since Sid Luckman. Though Cutler would end up with every passing record in team history, he just never could get the winning thing down.
After coming so close to a Super Bowl in 2010, it's been one disappointing season after another until things bottomed out last year. Cutler missed most of the games with a variety of injuries and threw more interceptions than touchdowns. It was likely the final straw for GM Ryan Pace and head coach John Fox. For them, the time feels right to move on.
That begs the question. What does Cutler want? Rumors have covered the spectrum from trades to a possible retirement. However, there is a slowly growing rumble that he not only plans to keep playing, but has a team in mind.
SOUTHWARD BOUND
Like most veteran quarterbacks, Cutler has reached the point of his career where it isn't about money anymore. He should be set for life in that department after eight seasons in Chicago making well north of $100 million. About to turn 34-years old, his focus is squarely on getting a last opportunity to win a Super Bowl before it's too late. That is why it's fair to expect he'd be interested in any team that might be considered a contender. One that might need help at quarterback. Over the past months it's become clear where the preferred destination is for most types like him, and he's no exception. According to Charlie Campbell of Walter Football, Jay wants the chance to play for the Houston Texans."With free agency fast approaching, time is running out for the Chicago Bears to trade veteran quarterback Jay Cutler. The Bears let be known they were shopping Cutler, and throughout the league, no one thought Chicago would get anything for Cutler. Thus, Cutler is likely to be released and has a favorite spot for where he would like to play next. Multiple sources tell WalterFootball.com that Cutler wants to sign with the Houston Texans. Cutler likes the situation in Houston with a No. 1 receiver in DeAndre Hopkins, a fast secondary receiver in Will Fuller, the eighth-ranked rushing offense led by Lamar Miller, and the No. 1 defense in the NFL. While Cutler has had issues with interceptions in his career, many around the league believe he would be an upgrade over Texans' 2016 starter Brock Osweiler, who struggled with interceptions and a lack of accuracy last year. Cutler would bring more accuracy and experience to the position with the arm to push the ball vertically to Hopkins and Fuller. Via safety K.J. Dillon, Houston's training staff also has experience working with players who are type-1 diabetics like Cutler."
