Luke Getsy became offensive coordinator for the
Chicago Bears on Sunday, January 30th. The next order of business for him is filling out his staff. A critical task if the team is going to build around Justin Fields properly. While there was an initial hope that Pep Hamilton could be secured for one such job, it appears the veteran coach prefers to call plays somewhere. So instead it seems the Bears have pivoted to another familiar face. Former Panthers offensive coordinator Joe Brady.
According to Jeff Hughes of Da Bears Blog, there is a strong belief the young coach will join the Bears staff. Likely as some form of quarterbacks coach or passing game coordinator. This shouldn't be a huge
surprise. Getsy and Brady are connected through longtime college coach Joe Moorhead. Brady also shares the same agent with Matt Eberflus. So his name was likely on the shortlist of options from the jump.
There is a definite logic to this idea.
One thing about Joe Brady that he is known for is a specialty in vertical passing concepts. It was his bread and butter at LSU as their passing game coordinator and again in Carolina as their offensive coordinator. It was a big reason Joe Burrow threw 60 touchdown passes and Teddy Bridgewater set a career-high in passing yards (3700). Chicago has lacked big plays down the field for years. Getting him in the building can help fix that.

Then there is Justin Fields. Among his biggest strengths as a quarterback is the deep ball. He is one of the most accurate vertical passers in the NFL already despite playing just one season. It makes perfect sense to pair him with a coach that understands how to craft plays that gets receivers open down the field. Another sign that Eberflus and Getsy know what they're doing.
If this move comes to pass, the Bears offensive coaching staff will have another young, bright mind whose best years are still ahead of him. One that learned several harsh but valuable lessons with the Panthers he can then apply to Chicago.
