The Chicago Bears hadn't beaten a team with a winning record since 2021. They also hadn't won two games in a row since that season as well. It had been a long stretch of brutal football for this franchise. Finally, on a chilly day at Soldier Field, the team put together their most complete performance in years. The defense led the way, forcing three turnovers and sacking Jared Goff four times. They allowed only 13 points, including none in the second half. Justin Fields did the rest, engineering 28 points with a touchdown through the air and one on the ground.
It was his third straight game without an interception, the first time that has happened in his career. One would think after another solid performance Fields would be happy. Not exactly. While he loved getting the win, the quarterback admitted he had a sour taste in his mouth. It wasn't from the plays he made, but the plays he didn't. There were multiple instances during the game, particularly in the second half, where Fields missed some golden opportunities for big plays. The one that haunted him the most was a deep shot in the 4th quarter to D.J. Moore that sailed on him.
Justin Fields isn't blind.
He understands this is a running theme for him this season. While he's been phenomenal at creating explosive plays for the Bears at times, he still suffers from ongoing consistency issues. For every incredible throw or run he delivers, there are a handful of gimmes that he misses. If he wants to remain the starter for this team and lead them to a championship, that is a problem he has to fix. Super Bowl winners consistently take advantage of opportunities when they appear. Fields hasn't figured that out.
The fact he recognizes the problem is a good thing. He's not ignorant of the issue. Knowing how hard he works, it wouldn't be surprising if he continues to fine-tune his approach until he starts hitting on those plays at some point. If anything, this development is a good thing. Matt Millen said the best thing that can happen to you is winning a game and not feeling good about it. That means you'll work hard to correct the problems, ensuring you perform even better the next time. Justin Fields has that mentality.
