It's hardly a secret at this point that Kyle Long isn't a fan of the current Chicago Bears regime. He admitted as much on several occasions. He never "retired" as so many people were led to believe. The Bears fired him. While he understands why they came to that decision, that doesn't mean he agreed with it.
Now we may have even more information as to why he's become more than a bit salty in the past year. It wasn't just the fact that he was fired. It may have also been how the Bears fired him. Like everybody else, Long was on Twitter soaking in the news of former Vice President Joe Biden securing the 2020 election over President Donald Trump.
It was at this point he decided to make a joke.
For those who aren't up to speed, Trump was the host of the popular reality TV show "The Apprentice" for several years. One of the trademarks coming out of that was how he would eliminate every contestant with the words, "You're fired." When a Bears fan turned Long's joke around on the Bears, the 31-year old let slips a pretty startling revelation. Apparently, GM Ryan Pace and head coach Matt Nagy didn't even have the guts to give him the news face to face. They instead delivered it through Long's agent.

Kyle Long deserved better than that
Nobody was expecting a parade or anything. Yet to not at least give the man the courtesy of telling him to his face? That's disrespectful. Long was a three-time Pro Bowler. One of their best offensive linemen of the 2010s. Not to mention a man who put his body through severe punishment with a litany of different injuries to help this team get back to winning. It's not like he gave up and quit. He kept fighting to come back. Fighting to make the Bears relevant. Such a man deserves admiration and common courtesy. For two guys in Nagy and Pace who are known for fostering tight locker rooms? This feels a bit too cold. Perhaps brought on by the fact that Kyle was never one of "their guys."People forget this.
Long wasn't drafted by Pace. He was around two years before the GM arrived. Nagy was his third head coach. Neither man had any personal investment in the guard by the times they arrived. That could explain why it was easy for them to cut ties. It's just another reminder that the NFL is an unforgiving business. The days of team loyalty to players are long gone. Only the best of the best get preferential treatment. Kyle Long is currently contemplating a comeback. He's upped his weight to around 307 lbs. His body should be recovered from all its injuries. It will be interesting to see if he decides to play for a new team. Something he didn't want to even contemplate last year. Perhaps he might be biding his time to see if Nagy and Pace get the boot next offseason.Comments
