The playing career of Kyle Long is over. All things considered, it was a good one. It lasted seven seasons and including three Pro Bowls. Many former players would've killed for that kind of run. Long though laments he wishes it could've gone on longer. He loved playing for the Chicago Bears and badly wanted to help the organization win a championship. He considers himself a "Bear for life" by his own words.
However, the retirement from playing his permanent in his mind. His body just can't take the punishment anymore. When he stopped being an "ass-kicker," he realized it was time to step away. That said, it doesn't sound like Long is prepared to give up on being involved with the game of football, nor the Bears for that matter. He talked about his career on First Things First for Fox Sports 1.
There he stated quite clearly he'd love an opportunity to stay involved with the organization in some capacity. He didn't state what kind of role he'd seek but seemed open to anything provided he could be of help.
What could Kyle Long do for the Bears?
The truth is there are plenty of avenues for Long to take in this regard. He's a multitalented human being. His fire and motivational skills would make for an instant shift to the coaching ranks if he wished to join Nagy's staff as some sort of assistant. He could go the Ozzie Newsome route, getting involved with the team as a scout and working his way up the ladder there. Then there is the Spice Adams or Tom Thayer route where he could join the Bears media division as a commentator or analyst.
It wouldn't be too hard for the franchise to find some sort of role for him to play. He has something to contribute and he's well-loved and respected inside Halas Hall. It would be great to see him bounce back from all this misfortune to remain a big help to the Bears.
